Over Hanqing
Born in China,Hanqing Zhou began his musical training as a pianist since he was 3 years old. He kept honing his craft and developing his musical artistry as a pianist until the moment he was discovered by the Chinese Opera professor Zhenhua Chang in Ningbo University when he was 16, therefore he was convinced to become an Opera singer to maximize his artistic potential.
From 2015 to 2022, he was one of the classical singing students in Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag and obtained his master diploma. He is vocally trained by internationally renowned Dutch Soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek and tenor Frank van Aken. He has performed numerous concerts in the major concert halls in the Netherlands and China, such as Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Leiden Gehoorzaal, Haarlem Gehoorzaal, Zuiderstrand Theater Den Haag, TivoliVredenburg Utrecht and so on. He has worked with Leiden Sinfonietta, Residentie Orkest, Utrechts Studenten Koor en Orkest, Radio Filharmonisch Orkest in different projects. He was invited in 2017 and 2018 to sing in the Chinese new year celebration gala in the city hall of Den Haag with the Chinese Soprano Xiaolan Ji. He was also invited by CNTV to sing in the Chinese new year celebration gala in 2021 and 2022 in live broadcast which was watched by the audience who live in 69 countries around the world. He was invited to sing Bass aria “La calunnia è un venticello” in the the gala performance of “Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of ambassadorial diplomatic relations between China and the Netherlands by Dutch overseas Chinese Community” in 2022. His repertoires include the roles of Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), Zarastro (die Zauberflöte), Colline (La Bohème), Zoroastro (Orlando), Masetto (Don Giovanni), Raphaël (Die Schöpfung), Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Moses (die Israeliten in der Wüste). In the opera season 2021-2022, he made his role debut of Uberto in Pergolesi’s La serva Padrona directed by David Prins. and he also made his role debut as Sprecher in DNOA’s new produtcion die Zauberflöte with Residentie Orkest conducted by Patrick Lange and directed by Gabriele Rech. He has also made his role debut of Dottore Grenvil in the new production of La Traviata in Festival Classique 2022 directed by Sybrand van der Werf. His Lieder recitals are also greatly valued by the audience, repertoires include the art songs and Lieder composed by F. Schubert, R. Schumann, R. Strauss, S. Rachmaninoff, H. Duparc and so on.

Hoe ik klassieke zangles geef
Lestechnieken en Methodologie
Mijn benadering van klassieke zangonderwijs is gericht op een combinatie van techniek, muzikaliteit en expressie. Ik streef ernaar om elke student te begeleiden bij het ontwikkelen van een gezonde en expressieve stem die geschikt is voor klassieke muziek. Mijn methode omvat:
- Adembeheersing en Ondersteuning: We beginnen met ademhalingsoefeningen om een solide basis te leggen voor een ontspannen en gecontroleerde zangtechniek.
- Stemtechniek en Resonantie: Ik help studenten bij het ontwikkelen van een evenwichtige stemproductie, inclusief het werken aan registers, klankkleur en projectie met een focus op de principes van bel canto.
- Interpretatie en Muzikaliteit: Naast technische oefeningen werken we aan interpretatie, frasering en dynamiek om de muzikale inhoud van een stuk tot leven te brengen.
- Repertoire Keuze: Het repertoire wordt zorgvuldig gekozen op basis van de stem, technische vaardigheid en muzikale smaak van de student. Dit omvat klassieke aria’s, liederen, en eventueel oratoriumwerken.
- Gezonde Stemgebruik: Ik besteed veel aandacht aan stemgezondheid en vermijd overbelasting door bewust te werken aan een goede zanghouding en stemhygiëne.
De Duur van de Lessen
Lessen duren doorgaans:
- 45 tot 60 minuten: Voor beginners en studenten die voornamelijk werken aan basisvaardigheden.
- 60 tot 90 minuten: Voor gevorderde zangers die werken aan meer veeleisend repertoire of intensieve technische verbeteringen.
De lengte en frequentie van de lessen worden afgestemd op jouw doelstellingen en stemontwikkeling.
Mijn Kwalificaties en Ervaring als Leraar
- Opleiding:
- Bachelor en/of Master in Klassieke Zang of Muziekpedagogie (afhankelijk van je voorkeur kun je dit verder invullen, bijvoorbeeld conservatoriumopleiding).
- Certificering in zangpedagogie en stemtechniek.
- Ervaring:
- Meer dan 5 jaar ervaring in het lesgeven aan studenten van verschillende niveaus, zowel individueel als in groepen.
- Uitgebreide ervaring in het begeleiden van zangers voor audities, examens, concerten en optredens.
- Actieve achtergrond als uitvoerend zanger in klassieke muziek, wat praktische inzichten biedt in de eisen van het vak.

How I Teach Classical Singing
Teaching Techniques and Methodology
My approach to classical singing instruction focuses on a combination of technique, musicality, and expression. I strive to guide each student in developing a healthy and expressive voice suitable for classical music. My methodology includes:
- Breath Control and Support: We begin with breathing exercises to build a solid foundation for relaxed and controlled singing technique.
- Vocal Technique and Resonance: I help students develop vocal production, including work on register, timbre, and projection with a focus on bel canto principles.
- Interpretation and Musicality: In addition to technical work, we work on interpretation, phrasing, and dynamics to bring the great content of a piece to life.
- Repertoire Selection: Repertoire is carefully chosen based on the student’s voice, technical ability, and intricate taste. This includes classical arias, songs, and composed oratorio works.
- Healthy Voice Use: I pay a lot of attention to vocal health and alternative strain by consciously working on good singing posture and vocal hygiene.
The Duration of the Lessons
Lessons usually last:
- 45 to 60 minutes: For beginners and students working mainly on basic skills.
- 60 to 90 minutes: For advanced singers working on more demanding repertoire of intensive technical materials.
The length and frequency of the reduction are tailored to your goals and vocal development.
My Qualifications and Experience as a Teacher
- Education:
- Bachelor and/or Master in Classical Singing or Music Pedagogy (depending on your preference you can fill this in further, for example conservatory education).
- Certification in singing pedagogy and vocal technique.
- Experience:
- More than 5 years of experience in teaching students of different levels, both individually and in groups.
- Extensive experience in accompanying singers for auditions, exams, concerts and performances.
- Active background as a performing singer in classical music, which offers practical implications in the demands of the profession.
