I am a multi-disciplinary artist and writer based in Rotterdam.

I studied business as my bachelor and did a master degree in the programme of Visual Arts & Visual Communication Design and currently pursuing my second master’s degree in Art Praxis, at the Dutch Art Institute.

My specialisation is contemporary art and museum studies with focus on knowledge systems and historiography.

For the last 7 years my essays and reviews has been published in exhibition catalogues, online and print art publications. I am a member of AICA (International Association of Art Critics). I participated in numerous exhibitions and residency programs as an artist and curated and coordinated exhibitions on a freelance basis.

I have teaching experience of 3 years, working as a teaching assistant of a comprehensive art history course at Sabancı University, Istanbul. Engaging with a wide range of freshman and sophomore year students mostly from fields outside of social sciences, I have gained extensive experience in communicating people with different backgrounds and interests as well as cultivating engagement and participation within the classroom setting through use of traditional and digital learning tools.

Teaching methodology:

I believe individual curiosity and interest should guide a learning trajectory. Thus my teaching method is based on dialogue between the facilitator and participant: through active engagement participants are supported to develop their own creative and critical perspectives on art historical subjects.

My teaching centers on cultivating discussions by providing comparative and cross-cultural examples from different periods of art history (spanning from ancient to contemporary art).

Content:

The content of the course follows the traditional periodization of Western art history as a starting point. However, courses aim to introduce critical perspectives to art historiography and cultivate a non-hegemonic
understanding of artistic outputs across geographies. The content will be enriched by cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary perspectives. Overall, the content and methodology prioritizes developing a creative and critical approach in which to assess art and visual culture from all ages rather than providing textbook knowledge.

*The participant may take the course one by one or request a title that is of interest to them.

How each lesson flows:

In each lesson 2-4 examples and a set of guiding questions will be provided to start the conversation. These examples will be from that week's subject in comparison with examples from different period or cultural geography. For example, in the Ancient Roman week, there will be a comparison between an ancient marble statue and a contemporary performance piece.

Throughout the discussion there will be some moments of lecturing about the cultural, historical context or introducing key concepts and frameworks related to that week's subject, which will also serve to cultivate further questions.

Your demand, curiosities and commitment will guide your learning:) So it is very important that you are willing to engage with the visual material I present and make an effort to freely express your mind, leaving aside the anxiety of making mistakes. When you are an active participant in the learning process instead of being at the receiver end, your learning not only gets more enjoyable but also more rooted.

The reason that I love the method of dialogue is that the positions of facilitator and participant are not fixed and both parties learn from each other. While cultivating critical and non-hegemonic perspectives to art historiography, I think it is highly important to approach learning in a non-hierarchical manner, so I don't position myself as the ms. know-it-all and open to learn with and from you as well.

If the participant prefers, each lesson will be supported by weekly readings for further learning or preparation for the next course.

If the participant prefers, assignments will be included in the course plan. Assignments may take the form of reflections, aiming to encourage digesting what is learned and exploring further into the topic or they may take the form of visual exercises.

The content, readings and assignments will always be personalized according to the participant.
