Over Derin

I'm a theatre director, playwright, and performer originally from Türkiye, currently living in Belgium after spending time in Finland. My work focuses on cross-cultural, atmosphere-driven storytelling and exploring how we can reinterpret myths, folklore, and familiar narratives through a contemporary perspective.

One of my most significant projects has been writing and directing Louhi, an English-language play for the Student Theatre of Oulu, which was selected for the official Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture programme. Through this project, I explored Finnish mythology and the historical villainisation of powerful female figures, questioning how cultural narratives shape the way we understand characters, identities, and power.

My creative perspective has also been shaped by my multicultural background and my training in directing and acting in Mérida, Spain. I'm particularly interested in the relationship between atmosphere, sound, and emotional performance, as well as the ways theatre can challenge established interpretations of history, mythology, and identity.

As a writer and director, I'm drawn to stories that leave room for ambiguity, contradiction, and interpretation. I see theatre as a space where we can question familiar narratives, explore complex human experiences, and discover new perspectives on stories we thought we already knew.

My approach to creative writing and scriptwriting draws on a combination of practical theatre-making, literary analysis, and dramaturgical methods. Having written and directed my own theatrical production, Louhi, I have experienced the process of developing an original idea into a script and bringing it to the stage. This experience informs how I approach character development, dramatic structure, dialogue, and the relationship between a text and its performance.

In my lessons, I draw inspiration from methods such as dramaturgical analysis, improvisation-based writing, freewriting, character biographies, subtext analysis, and scene work. We can explore how to build complex characters, create tension through dialogue, use silence and ambiguity, and develop themes that go beyond the surface of a story. I'm also interested in experimenting with non-linear narratives, fragmented structures, symbolism, and different approaches to storytelling.

My own creative practice is influenced by my interest in literature, human psychology, relationships, and the social dimensions of art. I encourage students to observe the world around them, question their assumptions, and turn their own observations into original material. We can use existing plays and literary works as starting points for discussion and experimentation, while developing scripts that reflect each student's individual interests and perspective.

Whether you want to write your first short play, develop an existing script, experiment with unconventional forms, or explore more profound themes through theatre, my goal is to help you find your own artistic voice and understand the choices behind your writing. I believe the most interesting work often begins with curiosity, uncertainty, and the willingness to explore ideas without immediately knowing where they will lead.
