ADVENTUROUS LESSONS IN INDIGENOUS ARCHITECTURE
From steaming rainforests to frozen tundras. In these lessons, we travel among indigenous peoples across the globe and discover how residential architecture emerges from extreme environments.
Homes shaped by heat and rain — but also by cold, wind, and snow — built with local materials and guided by centuries-old knowledge.
We explore traditional building techniques of tribes in tropical regions as well as in icy landscapes, where dwellings offer protection from monsoon rains, scorching sun, or bitter cold.
Each dwelling tells a story of culture, sustainability, and the deep connection between people, nature, and ways of life.
A journey of discovery in which architecture is not designed…but born from its environment.
WHO AM I
I am Pauline Boedianto, indonesian born architect, urban development advisor, and expert in livable cities, sustainable housing development. For over 25 years, I have guided complex urban projects around the world — from slum rehabilitation and post-disaster recovery to strategic urban transformation — combining academic depth with hands-on practice in politically, socially, and culturally complex contexts.
I hold a Master of Science in Architecture, a Doctorate in Theology with expertise in human settlements, and professional experience spanning government advisory roles, international research, and teaching at leading universities. My work bridges technology, culture, and human life, blending sustainable, adaptable, and community-focused design with ethical leadership, conflict resolution, and participatory planning.
From advising the Ministry of Public Works and Housing in Indonesia on resilient urban design, to mentoring communities in post-disaster reconstruction, to research on demountable, circular housing systems — my journey has been one of connecting people, place, and purpose
I have spoken at TEDxJakarta, (Opgeslagen informatie) and numerous international forums, sharing insights on social architecture, sustainable settlements, and transformative urban interventions. My research and publications on demountable buildings, ecological cities, and circular construction practices have been recognized internationally.
Together, in these lessons, you will explore how indigenous architecture — from tropical rainforests to frozen tundras — emerges from extreme conditions, and how dwellings are shaped by culture, climate, and centuries of knowledge. And you will do so guided by my expertise: a professional who has spent decades bringing architecture, humanity, and the environment into harmony.
