Over Julia
I'm originally from Spain and have always been a curious person. I came to Groningen for my Master's in Evolutionary Biology, which I completed cum laude, and I will soon complete my PhD in Evolutionary Genomics. During my PhD, I have primarily worked with genomic data to understand the molecular and genetic basis of adaptation and speciation in cichlid fishes.
Scientific writing can seem challenging at first, but I have found that once you overcome the initial barriers, it becomes a structured and rewarding process. I would like to help others develop the confidence and skills needed to communicate their scientific ideas effectively.
During my career, I have contributed to research projects resulting in six scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals, including leading journals in evolutionary biology. I have also supervised MSc students and worked as a teaching assistant in a first-year Biology laboratory course. Recently, I received an award for my first-author publication in Molecular Biology and Evolution (MBE). These experiences have given me extensive insight into the process of developing, writing, and publishing scientific research.
Although I primarily offer guidance on academic writing, I'm also happy to help with other topics related to my expertise such as bioinformatics, genetics, molecular biology and evolutionary biology. Communication will be in English, as this is the main language used in scientific communication.

Planning and organizing a thesis can be overwhelming. My lessons are intended for Bachelor's and Master's students who are struggling with academic writing or who want to take their scientific writing to the next level.
My expertise lies primarily in the life sciences (genetics, evolutionary biology, ecology, biotechnology and biomedical sciences). However, many of the principles of clear scientific writing apply across disciplines!
I help you with:
- Planning and organizing your essay/thesis
- Structuring the different sections
- Designing effective figures and tables
- Scientific storytelling
- Understanding and responding to feedback from supervisors and peer review
- Managing scientific references
Each person is different, so I adapt my lessons to your specific needs and goals. We will start by identifying the areas you find most challenging and what you would like to improve. From there, we will work through practical examples, targeted exercises, and revisions of your own work, so that you not only improve your current project but also develop skills you can apply independently in future academic work.
