I started studying classical singing at 12, but as a little girl I used to pretend I was Maria Callas in my bedroom (with a towel on my head as a wig, of course). My voice is my instrument, and it has accompanied me on all my musical adventures: opera, jazz, musicals…

  2) “Mr. Blue Sky” by ELO! It’s like a dose of good vibes straight to the heart — how could you not love it? Although I could also play “Good Vibrations” by The Beach Boys even while doing cardio… and I hate doing cardio.

  3) Once I had a lesson with a student who very seriously told me his goal was to “sing like Darth Vader doing flamenco.” I thought he was joking… but he wasn’t. Spoiler: we ended up creating an experimental version of La leyenda del tiempo that was neither flamenco nor galactic, but we had a lot of laughs and learned a lot about costodiaphragmatic breathing.

• 4) Wat is volgens jou het moeilijkste instrument om te beheersen en waarom?

  4) The violin. Because it has no frets, it doesn’t forgive even half a centimeter, and at the beginning it sounds more like an offended cat than Tchaikovsky. Although I’d also say the voice is difficult… because it comes without an instruction manual and is deeply connected to our emotions.

• 5) Wat zijn, volgens jou, de sleutels tot succes?

  Enjoy it (otherwise, what’s the point?)
  
  Listen — to others and to yourself.
  
  Be consistent, but without turning into a robot.
  
  And if all else fails, always keep a good cup of tea and a karaoke bar nearby.

  7) When I was a student, during a choir rehearsal, I got so carried away singing O Fortuna that I fell off the platform. But I fell gracefully — and pianissimo. As a teacher, once a student brought me a bouquet of flowers after singing his first full song without going off-key.

  8) Showing that I’m having as much fun as they are (or more), adapting to what they truly like, and making singing feel like an adventure rather than an obligation.
