I think that when it comes to languages the best way to learn is to actively engage with the language. Because of this I will take both a formal and informal approach to teaching. Formal by explaining and introducing grammar, vocabulary according to level and then solving language-certificate style exercises to test and explore the knowledge. Informal by constantly speaking in English to my student, encouraging them to reply to me and actively use what they learn in conversation. I also encourage mistakes and am trying to teach my students that it is better to try and make a mistake, both in writing and speaking, than not try at all. To keep them engaged I also opt for interactive activities such as watching videos on subjects they are interested in and reading (short) texts and books, depending on the level.
