Over Catrin
The first act: living my singing passion
I grew up in Cardiff, Wales, with opera in the home. My mother was a mezzo, my father was a science professor with a deep passion for the arts. I had always been a natural singer with an intuitive approach to singing and performing.
My singing career as a soprano started in 1990 after graduating at the Opera Studies Course at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. What followed was an extensive, international career in concerts, operas, recitals, and recordings. I have performed more than 30 principal operatic roles around the world including Ilia, Susanna, Tatyana, Blanche de la Force, Zerlina, Donna Elvira, Gilda, Mélisande, Alice Ford, Anne Trulove and Poppea amongst others.
I have worked with opera companies such as The Royal Opera House Covent Garden, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, San Francisco Grand Opera, Santa Fé Opera, Aix-en-Provence Festival, Opera du Rhin Strasbourg, Theâtre du Châtelet Paris, New Israeli Opera Tel Aviv, Grand Theâtre de Genève, Opera am Rhein Düsseldorf and Bayerische Staatsoper Munich.
In my singing career I have collaborated with renowned directors and conductors including Claudio Abbado, Pierre Boulez, Daniel Harding, Jaap van Sweden, Sir Charles Mackerras, Paul Daniel, Sir Peter Brook, Phyllida Lloyd, David Alden and Katie Mitchell. I have worked in recitals and recordings with accompanists Iain Burnside, Graham Johnsson and Malcolm Martineau.
The second act: a bump in the road
However, well into my career and after the birth of my first child, I faced vocal challenges due to a changing body and a lack of technical understanding to feed my evolving voice. Roles were being suggested to me which suited my timbre but I knew I could not sustain them without working drastically on my technique. This forced me to have to start from the beginning to rebuild my voice while maintaining a busy career, which led to a profound perspective on singing. I learned first hand on how to help those struggling with similar mid-career issues. I started teaching more regularly and realised that I had found my true passion. A passionate part of my teaching has been to diagnose issues and to work with those recovering from vocal problems and technical difficulties.
The third act: voice repair and my teaching passion
With a knowledge of what it takes to attain a solo career at a high level and a deep understanding of vocal technique, I now serve as a senior voice teacher at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, Netherlands. I train singers on the master programme of the Dutch National Opera Academy as well as in my own private studio in Antwerp, Belgium or online.
Many of my students have gone on to have successful, international careers. I passionately share valuable knowledge gained over the years from my own personal development as a teacher and inspired by some of my mentors W. Stephen Smith, Janice L. Chapman and Margreet Honig.
I have given masterclasses in Iceland, Romania, Belgium, The Netherlands and most recently in Portugal.
Because my work at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague is at a multi-national level, I am highly skilled in understanding and adressing technical issues that certain mother tongues might present.
